We’d been best friends since jr. high, but were already growing apart before we stopped being friends altogether. She had three kids and her life pretty much revolved around them. She’d also become more conservative as she got older, or maybe I was just more sensitive to it.
At one point I noticed that she hadn’t IMed or emailed me in months, and we hadn’t seen each other in person since the last summer (this was spring), and I wondered if maybe she’d found out somewhere about me or my wife being trans and was avoiding me, or if it was just coincidence.
When I came out to my mom, I found out it definitely wasn’t coincidence. My mom already knew something was going on because this friend had called my mom (which would have involved looking up the website for the Christian ministry my mom and her husband run in order to find their phone number, because my friend certainly didn’t have it) and told her that she was concerned because she’d read on facebook that my [wife] “thought she was a woman”.
I couldn’t believe it. How are you such a busybody that you think it’s appropriate to call a grown person’s parents to snitch on them? (Keep in mind we were in our thirties at this time! Not that it would be appropriate at any age, but jfc.) Not only that, but this same friend, good Christian woman that she is, had been lying to her own mother for a couple years about one of her children. But it was okay for her to lie to her mom, to completely make up circumstances about this kid’s adoption, and in the process lie to the child herself and her siblings, because she was sorry about it and had prayed for forgiveness (even though it was an ongoing lie, so I guess she wasn’t too sorry or repentant).
I sent her an email calling her a fucking hypocrite and have not had any contact with her since. It does make me sad occasionally, because we had a lot of good times over the years, but like I said, we had already been growing apart due to other factors, so I’m not too broken up over it.
