OH LOOKY HERE, IT SEEMS TO BE A PERSON WHO IS NOT MTF OR FTM AND IDENTIFIES AS TRANS. WHODA THUNK?
Seriously. While I know some binary trans folks think non-binaries aren’t “really” trans, I really don’t think we need yet another thing that Others us from binary trans folks. The labels of binary and non-binary are quite enough to differentiate without alienating. Plus, there’s now the mistaken assumption that trans* and trans are different and that really needs to stop. I have had quite enough of this hierarchy of transness business, and to me the asterisk is really quite unnecessary and serves more to separate than unify.
Yeah, this is my same problem with people who insist on an across-the-board difference between transsexual and transgender. It’s fine for you (general you) personally to say you prefer one word over the other to refer to yourself (whether that’s trans* or trans or transsexual or transgender), but you can’t insist that they always mean different things, because they don’t. Many people use all these words interchangeably and thus when you say transgender means these people but not these people or trans* means those people but not those other people, you’re inevitably erasing people and often creating a hierarchy of who’s more trans or really trans or whatever.
